Did you know that Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was originally entitled The Uncomplicated Tale of Dr Heckle and Mr Jive?
However, his publisher felt that a linear story about a surgeon who spent his days undermining his colleagues with crude outbursts and his evenings pretending to be a 1940’s Harlem jazz cat wouldn’t resonate with educated, white males under 40.
This is also why the story became about pretending you don’t take drugs as a way to cope with crippling sexual repression.
